The City of Madison contracts snow removal for carriage lanes (alleys) in the Meadowlands. Snowplows may occasionally push snow into driveway entrances, which is unavoidable. For concerns, contact the City at 608-246-4532 or visit their website.
Residents must clear snow and ice from sidewalks by noon the day after snowfall ends. Remove ice when possible or apply sand for traction. Failure to comply may result in fines or the City clearing the sidewalk at your expense. Free sand is available at designated locations—details are on the City’s Winter Information Page.
The City prioritizes salting main roads, bus routes, and areas near schools and hospitals. Residential streets are not routinely salted to protect the environment but are treated with sand for traction. Salting of residential streets may occur during severe ice storms.
From November 15 to March 15, alternate side parking rules apply from 1:00 AM to 7:00 AM:
During snow emergencies, these rules apply citywide to allow plows to clear all streets.
There is a $60 fine if you do not follow winter parking rules. If your car is towed, there is also a $115 towing fee.
Call the winter parking hotline at 608-261-9111 to hear recorded information about alternate side parking.
